AHTCC Celebrates 20th Annual Home Court Charity Basketball Game
March 21, 2007
On Wednesday, March 21, 2007 the Coalition cosponsored the 20th Annual Home Court Charity Basketball Game. The annual event was started by a group of Georgetown law students in 1987 and pits Georgetown University Law Center faculty and staff (the Hoya Lawyas) against Members of Congress and their staff (the Hill's Angels). All proceeds for the event benefit the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing free legal services to homeless individuals and families in Washington, DC. Over the past 19 years, Home Court has raised over $2 million to support the Clinic's efforts. This year's efforts exceeded any other year with more than $300,000 raised for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
In a hard-fought game, the Hoya Lawya narrowly defeated the Hill's Angels 47 to 38. Hill's Angels coach Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) was disappointed by the loss but vowed to be back for a little revenge next year. The Hill's Angels had great turnout for this worthy cause. Other Congressional participants were Congressmen Jim Gerlach (R-PA), Zach Wamp (R-TN), Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Joe Baca (D-CA), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Kendrick Meek (D-FL), Jay Inslee (D-WA), Dean Heller (R-NV), Gene Green (D-TX), Kenny Hulshof (R-MO), Todd Tiahrt (R-KS), Mike Arcuri (D-NY), and Melvin Watt (D-NC).
Coalition representatives Francine Friedman, Heather Wetzel, and Victoria Spielman handed out AHTCC water bottles to attendees. AHTCC also sponsored the popular half-time shoot out between Georgetown University Law Center students aiming to win free books for the next semester.
