House Ways and Means Committee PASSES Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008

April 09, 2008

Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in a major victory for the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition and the Housing Credit industry, the House Ways and Means Committee passed—by an overwhelming, bipartisan majority—the Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008, H.R. 5720.

The Act was originally introduced by Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY) and makes significant changes to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit) program.  The legislation is intended to simplify the Housing Credit program and provide increased flexibility, efficiency, and preservation opportunities.  Many of the Coalition’s legislative priorities are included in this legislation.

H.R. 5720 does include changes from the previous version distributed by the Coalition.  The most current bill and JCT score are included below.  We expect the bill to proceed to the House floor soon.

If you have questions concerning this legislation please contact Coalition legislative counsel Jim Miller (202-282-5000 or jfmiller@winston.com) or Coalition executive director Victoria Spielman (202-282-5349 or info@taxcreditcoalition.org).  Text of the bill will be available online at www.taxcreditcoalition.org as soon as it is available.
