Marie Butterfield

Open Access Fellow

A native of The Bahamas, Marie Butterfield is a Senior, Finance major at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. She is a first-generation college student and describes her pursuit of an advanced degree as a “dream come true” because she envisions it will equip her for success in future endeavors.

Marie selected Finance as her major after taking multiple business classes in high school. Marie decided to study Finance, as opposed to accounting, because it allows her to engage and develop relationships with clients to understand their financial habits and goals.

Marie is very active on campus and is currently a member of the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business, the Benedict College Honors Program, Center for Financial Advancement, Society for Financial Education and Professional Development, and NABA Inc. In Marie’s spare time, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Marie’s passion for affordable housing developed from personal experiences and circumstances she observed in her community growing up. Marie looks forward to this fellowship, where she can express her passion and network with professionals, developing life-long skills and gaining real-world experience in the affordable housing and community development fields.

After graduating from Benedict College, Marie plans to further her education by obtaining a master’s degree and potentially, a Ph.D.
