AURORA APARTMENTS

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The renovation of Aurora Apartments, which began two years ago, is breathing new life into an historic 1930s structure, transforming it from a neglected state back into dignified housing for low-income seniors and the disabled. Aurora Apartments has brought 105 rehabilitated affordable rental homes for seniors aged 62 and older in the Tobin Hill neighborhood of San Antonio. Each apartment is affordable with 53 apartments designated for 50 percent AMI and 52 apartments designated for 60 percent AMI.

The property was the former historic Aurora Hotel, a 13-story elevator-serviced building that was originally constructed in 1929 and served as a high-end hotel through 1981 when it was converted to residential housing for seniors. Residents at Aurora Apartments have access to a community room, computer room, common laundry, a library, picnic areas, and recreational areas.

Rainbow Housing Assistance Corporation, a non-profit, is providing a wide variety of programs and services at no extra charge to the residents at Aurora. Services include web-based resident applied programs, financial literacy, employment readiness, health and nutrition, energy conservation, computer workshops, personal development, continuing education, senior classes, crisis intervention, parenting workshops, resident housing tips and resources, weekly exercises, national vocational programs, and enhanced coordinated services.

Financing for this property was facilitated by Boston Financial and developed by Fairstead Affordable. Aurora Apartments was developed using the 4 percent Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit).
