HERITAGE AT SURPRISE

Heritage at Surprise provides 100 homes affordable to households making 60% of area median income, which are accessible to the physically disabled and sensory impaired. Chronically homeless households are prioritized for residency through regional Coordinated Entry system, and the project also provides a preference for veterans.
The development by Gorman & Company is comprised of six buildings and is an integral component of the comprehensive revitalization strategy for the Surprise Original Town Site (OTS). The master redevelopment plan aims to revitalize the neighborhood while honoring its heritage. The plan will bring new businesses and jobs into the community and fulfill the goal of OTS, which is to become a revitalized district of quality housing combined with appropriate consumer-oriented retail and service functions.
An onsite supportive services coordinator at Heritage at Surprise assists residents in not only obtaining stability, but also provides residents with the tools and education to achieve self-sufficiency. Supportive services are offered through partnerships with local providers, and include on-site case management, financial literacy, computer training, assistance with benefits, establishing banking relationships, as well as programs and activities to stimulate physical and emotional stability. Amenities include a computer lab, multipurpose community space, a teen center, an abundance of outdoor recreational space.
An important community feature at the site is the HERITAGE mosaic mural which is comprised of over 1,000 hand painted clay tiles. This mural was commissioned by WHAM, a local non-profit art organization in the community. Each letter is 5’x3’ spelling out the word HERITAGE. Each letter is a different theme reflective the culture and heritage of the Original Town Site of Surprise. While the project was under construction, WHAM held a series of participation days for members of the community to work alongside WHAM artists and paint several tiles. The final product, which can be seen in the housing community’s interior courtyard, proudly depicts historical symbols of the people and elements that have made the Original Town Site so special to the city.
