BREWSTER’S APARTMENTS
Brewster’s Apartments in Anchorage, Alaska won the 2025 Recognition of Housing Tax Credit Excellence in the Small Metropolitan Area category.
Located in Anchorage, Alaska, Brewster’s Apartments is a twenty-one-home building located in the city’s neighborhood of Mountain View. For decades, the site was home to Brewster’s Clothing & Footwear, owned by Anchorage entrepreneur Charles Brewster. Shortly after Mr. Brewster’s passing, Cook Inlet Housing Authority (CIHA) purchased the property for a future affordable housing development. During the early development process, CIHA named the development “Brewster’s Apartments” to honor Mr. Brewster.
Brewster’s Apartments added 21 affordable homes to the Mountain View neighborhood, featuring two studio apartments and 19 one-bedroom apartments. Sixteen homes are reserved for residents at 50 percent of area median income (AMI) and 5 homes are reserved for residents at 60 percent AMI, with some units reserved and application preference given to formerly homeless individuals or families, people with disabilities, veterans, and Native Americans. Located on the neighborhood’s gateway intersection, Brewster’s Apartments is conveniently located near retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, businesses and public transportation, as well as neighborhood amenities such as parks, community gardens, schools and local library.
The development represents the efforts of Cook Inlet Housing Authority, R4 Capital, Northrim Bank, Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, and Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines to preserve, improve, and increase affordable housing opportunities in Anchorage, Alaska.
