LANDMARK AT ABILENE
Abilene, Texas
Located in Abilene, Texas and originally built in 1921, with additions in 1927 and 1958, the Travis Elementary School building sat vacant for over 40 years. In 2021, Overland Property Group purchased the vacant school with the intent to provide much needed affordable housing and preserve a historic building that many in the community desired to see saved. The original historic schoolhouse and cafetorium were renovated into twenty-two LIHTC homes for seniors 62 years and older. Additionally, a new single-story building was built onsite providing an additional seven homes, for a total of twenty-nine homes. The home mix features twenty-one 1bed/1bath and eight 2bed/2bath homes ranging from 30 percent to 60 percent AMI, with 8 of those homes receiving Project Based Vouchers (PBV) from the Abilene Housing Authority. Common amenities include a clubhouse, resident events, a dog park, onsite management, and ample parking.
Landmark at Abilene secured federal housing and state and federal historic tax credits through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program and the National Park Service’s and Texas Historical Commission’s Historic Tax Credit Program. With the third and final building opening to residents in January of 2025, this development is now on the National Register of Historic Places and a point of pride for the city of Abilene and its residents.
Landmark at Abilene was developed by Overland Property Group, LLC in partnership with Sarai Development Consulting, LLC, and syndicated by Midwest Housing Equity Group, with First Financial as the investor.
