The Prichard
The Prichard in Huntington, West Virginia won the 2026 Recognition of Housing Tax Credit Excellence in the Historic Housing category.
The Prichard Hotel was originally constructed in 1926 by Frederick Prichard as a 300-room hotel in Huntington, West Virginia. This National Register of Historic Places-recognized hotel operated until 1970, and before closing, hosted President John F. Kennedy and his campaign staff during the 1960 presidential campaign. Frederick Prichard originally developed the hotel to help support his family’s orphanage, the Prichard School, in Ona, West Virginia. After closing, the hotel became apartments and office space, and then was briefly repurposed as a drug rehabilitation center from 2014-2015. This latest transformation and preservation of the building into 108 affordable homes for seniors has enjoyed strong support from city, county, and state stakeholders.
The first and second floors of the Prichard are dedicated to a healthcare community service facility. This facility will serve senior citizens residing in the building as well as the surrounding community, providing health and wellness services in partnership with regional healthcare institutions. All 108 affordable homes are reserved for seniors over the age of 62, 98 of which receive rental assistance through the HUD 202 program to serve residents at 50 percent or less of the area median income.
The development represents the efforts of Winterwood Development, WNC and Associates, Aetna/CVS, West Virginia Housing Development Fund, Cornerstone Community Development Corporation, and Hope of the Midwest to preserve, improve, and increase affordable housing opportunities in Huntington, West Virginia.
