AMME’S STORY

Amme is in her first year of living at Wyndamere Apartments. She came to the community to provide housing in a safe, stable location for her children. Hear about Amme’s experience living at Wyndamere Apartments in her own words below:

On September 20, 2022, I will have lived here a year. The unit I had before this one had rodents in the home. I wanted to be in a better area for my kids. I lived in the city. There were a lot of shootings. It just wasn’t safe.

The process of getting in here was stressful, but Tracy Homer was always honest with me. You have people out there who hide the truth. Every time I emailed, she always got back to me. She made me feel better. She made me feel like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. But these waiting lists are ridiculous. I know it’s policies and procedures. But to be at the point of homelessness. It was God that really helped me. I felt like you always had to rob Peter to pay Paul, but I knew I wanted a home.

Whenever I have problems with the unit, the maintenance man responds when I call. The only thing I don’t like is the notices on the door. And I like a clean outside. You can’t control other people, but I don’t like to come out and see trash on the ground. I pick it up cause Tracy shouldn’t have to deal with that.

I have two children, a girl and a boy. In previous units, they never wanted to be home. We weren’t comfortable. But here, when work and school is done, we spend a lot of time at home. I actually got the keys on my daughter’s 5th birthday. She wanted a new house. That can be hurtful as a parent, to know they want it and your back is against the wall. I was on the waiting list for a lot of years, but when I received the email from Tracy, it felt right on time.

I haven’t participated in much since COVID. When things go back to normal, I’ll be more interested to participate. This apartment helps me because I’m a single parent with two children. Wyndamere saved me and I appreciate that. I feel better as a person. I like to go home when I get off work and I didn’t always feel that way.
