Wesley Housing has owned and operated Knightsbridge Apartments (“Knightsbridge”) since 1981. The Buckingham neighborhood in Arlington, VA, where Knightsbridge is located, has historically provided much needed federally subsidized housing in a County that has lost affordable housing at a tremendous rate.

Wesley Housing received a reservation of 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credits (Housing Credit) and State and Federal Historic Credits to facilitate the rehabilitation. 89 percent of homes are restricted at 50 percent of AMI and 11 percent of apartments are restricted at 40 percent of AMI. To ensure compatibility with Section 504 for disabled access, six existing apartments were modified to meet current accessible/barrier-free living requirements, including inclusion of new accessible entries and exterior ramps.

The project team preserved the original courtyard look/elevations, while simultaneously addressing storm-water management requirements and preserving components of the building’s envelope. In order to replicate the authentic look of the building interior courtyard walkways, an integrated stamped concrete brick and walkway design was also implemented.

Knightsbridge employs a full-time Resident Services Coordinator (RSC) who shares her time between Knightsbridge and two nearby Wesley-owned apartment communities in Arlington. The RSC is available to help the 90 residents of Knightsbridge prevent eviction in times of crisis, navigate social services, manage their health, enhance their careers, and more.

One of Wesley Housing’s roving full-time Employment Specialists is also available at the property to provide one-on-one employment coaching, which includes resume writing, job identification and application, skills building, and more.
