NORTHWEST INDIANA VETERANS VILLAGE

Northwest Indiana Veterans Village is an affordable apartment community in Gary, IN, designed to house and care for formerly homeless veterans. The $10 million project was made possible through a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (Housing Credit) award from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and syndicated through Cinnaire, resulting in $8.7 million in equity. Additional financing partners include the City of Gary HOME Funds, and IHCDA community development block grant funding.

A cooperative partnership with Cinnaire, property manager Continental Management and the Department of Veterans Affairs provides residents on-site coordinated support services and ongoing care. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides case management while community colleges and universities provide financial counseling and education to increase job-readiness and daily living skills for residents. Additional services include career development, crisis intervention, support groups, financial budgeting, meal preparation skills, housekeeping skills, safety and hazard recognition, and computer skills.

NWI Veterans Village has become a popular community for groups and individuals wishing to volunteer their time and resources to support veterans. The project has received widespread community support and received the 2019 Corporation for Supportive Housing Design and Delivery Leadership Award, an honor recognizing the VA and Continental Management for their commitment to delivering high-quality supportive housing in Indiana.

NWI Veterans Village features 44 high-quality affordable homes and offers a range of support services for residents. The 56,000-square-foot, 3-story building includes a dining hall, culinary arts training center, fitness room, arts and crafts room, computer lab, a library, a walking trail and picnic area. The rooftop patio serves as a gathering space for residents and features a community garden where veterans can embrace a healthy lifestyle while spending time in a peaceful, healing environment.
