Rauner Family Veterans Apartments in Hobart, IN won a 2022 Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award in the Housing for Veterans of the Armed Services category.
The Rauner Family Veterans Apartments, owned by A Safe Haven Foundation and developed by KMA Companies, provides 75 affordable homes serving formerly homeless veterans with physical and mental disabilities in Hobart, Indiana. The property works collaboratively with the nearby Veterans Affairs Medical Center to provide on-site and off-site supportive services to provide residents with dedicated and personalized care. Beyond individual apartment homes, residents have access to community amenities which include a multipurpose room, community kitchen, laundry facilities, bike racks, and an outdoor patio area. Supportive services available to residents include voluntary case management, intensive employment assistance, life skills training, job placement and coaching, and mentoring and peer support groups.
The property is located in proximity to Merrillville’s United States Veterans Administration (USVA) office, which provides case managers, nurses, and peer support specialists to the residents and staff of Rauner Family Veterans Apartments. Other services provided by the USVA include vocation and job training, employment services, and education opportunities. Additionally, other community partners provide a food pantry onsite, along with special holiday events and meals and other celebrations.
Rauner Family Veterans Apartments represents a valuable asset to the Hobart and Merrillville community, providing safe, decent, affordable housing for the area’s most vulnerable residents while also recognizing the need for unique, specialized services onsite to provide critical care to its residents.
