2018 Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award Winner in the Veterans Housing Category
Patriot Place Apartments is a 50-unit Housing Credit development targeting homeless and very-low income veterans, particularly those with disabilities. Its purpose is to provide the services, social and peer-group supports needed to enable homeless and very-low income veterans with disabilities to live in a safe secure, supportive, and supervised environment while providing the highest degree of independence possible. Patriot Place was developed by Accessible Space, Inc.
To accommodate veterans with disabilities, 50 percent of all units at Patriot Place are designed to be fully accessible, including audio and visual enhancements. Wheelchair accessible features include oversized wheel-in showers, roll-under countertops and cook tops, adjustable closet shelves, and accessible electrical devices and outlets. The common areas at Patriot Place Apartments are also designed to maximize wheelchair accessibility including the community room and kitchen, library/lounge, computer room, exercise room, and indoor therapeutic spa. Patriot Place is also certified Energy Star rated with high efficiency heating and cooling equipment and Energy Star appliances. More than 10 percent of the total electrical consumption of Patriot Place Apartments is provided through photovoltaic solar cells installed on carport roofs.
Patriot Place Apartments partners with ASI’s Nevada Community Enrichment Program (NCEP) and Nevada Partners, Inc. to promote independence and community participation and integration through supportive and long-term care services. The NCEP is the only nonprofit, post-acute brain injury rehabilitation program in Nevada serving individuals with acquired and traumatic brain injuries. On a quarterly basis, NCEP provides direct services, including job training, independent living skills, volunteer opportunities, and exercise programs as well as physical, occupational, and speech counseling. An onsite coordinator also assists with home health care and homemaker assistance, taxi vouchers, energy assistance, and emergency food needs. Residents are provided with a number of other social supports, including a monthly newsletter containing information on services, community resources, and social activities.
Financing for Patriot Place Apartments included more than $1 million in Housing Credit equity provided by U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation.
