Freedom’s Path Augusta provides 78 affordable homes on the Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus in Augusta, GA. The property was developed by Communities for Veterans Development, the same team who developed Freedom’s Path in Hines, IL and Chillicothe, OH. To make the property possible, RBC Community Investments syndicated over $15.1 million of Housing Credit equity.

This development includes the historic rehabilitation of two existing buildings on the VAMC campus to provide supportive rental housing, with a preference for military veterans. The property is 100% subsidized by Project-Based Section 8 Vouchers, and 12 units are set aside under a Section 811 subsidy to provide housing for individuals with mental illness.

A 1945-era psychiatric hospital was reconfigured to contain 50 one-bedroom homes. A section of a 1914-era chapel for a Catholic convent and school was reconfigured to contain 28 efficiency homes. Property features include community space, fitness facility, computer center, laundry facilities, TV lounge and picnic/barbeque area, along with additional space for special needs service providers.

In addition to the proximity to VA medical facilities, the property offers supportive services including case management, support groups, financial literacy, employment assistance and computer training.
