FREEDOM’S PATH FORT HARRISON
Fort Harrison, Helena, MT
Freedom’s Path at Fort Harrison provides 42 affordable homes through the adaptive reuse of 11 historic buildings and 1 newly constructed building. The homes are available, but not restricted, to military veteran individuals and households. Freedom’s Path Fort Harrison was developed by Communities for Veterans Montana, LLC. The Fort Harrison Veterans Administration Hospital is adjacent to the site and features a 48-bed acute care, medical-surgical facility with a range of acute, chronic and specialized inpatient and outpatient services to veterans.
All 42 homes include a project-based VASH (Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) subsidy, ensuring that households pay only 30 percent of their income on rent. Five homes are reserved for households earning 40 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) or less, and 37 homes are reserved for households earning 60 percent of AMI or less. Nine homes are reserved for tenants recovering from substance abuse.
The development includes 23 one-bedroom and 19 two-bedroom homes in two-story interior-corridor buildings, along with 3 duplex buildings and 3 single-family homes. The property features a clubhouse with community lounge and activity space including a kitchen area, training resource center, social services provided through the adjacent VA, educational programs, and green space.
