On May 21, 2-15 Senators Franken (D-MN), Portman (R-OH), Murray (D-WA), Collins (D-ME), and King (I-ME) introduced S. 1412 (linked below) – a bill designed to help homeless students access affordable housing. The legislation would change the “student rules” to allow youth and veterans who experience or have recently experienced homelessness to be eligible for Housing Credit developments while they attend school full-time.
In introducing S. 1412, Senator Franken stated “Students shouldn’t have to choose between stable housing and going to school full-time. By giving low-income students access to affordable housing while they attend school, we can ensure that they are able to graduate and succeed.” Senate King added “Our current policies often force people who have faced homelessness to make the impossible choice between advancing their education and having a place to rest their head at night – and that just isn’t right.”
